BBB has tips for choosing a reputable exterminator.
When it comes to getting rid of unwanted insects or rodents in your home, you need to do some research on any exterminator you bring into your house. That's one tip offered by the Better Business Bureau of Greater Maryland. "Always do your homework. Start at BBB.org. Look for a company's rating; see if they're an accredited business. Pestworld.org is another great resource to find local professionals," says Jody Thomas, Vice President, Communications for the BBB of Greater Maryland, which includes Frederick County. She also suggests you talk with family members and friends, and see who they have used to get rid of unwanted pests in their homes.
Another tip for choosing a pest management company includes dealing with a licensed and qualified company. "They deal with many of the agents that they use, the substances. You have to be licensed to deal with those sort of things," Thomas says.
Just like you would when you hire a building contractor for your house, BBB urges you to get several estimates before agreeing to let anyone come into your home, and make sure you take the time to read any contract before you sign. Thomas says this is especially important after your home has been treated. "If there's a problem; if there's a recurrence; if you've got an infestation, are they going to come back out and treat? Is that free to you under the contract? Is there an additional charge? What kind of guarantees are you going to get," says Thomas.
She says most legitimate business people will not have any problems if you want to read over a contract and ask questions.
Right now, BBB reports not too many complaints coming in about pest management companies, or termite-related services. "In the last year, we've received 41 complaints that were just general about pest control providers; and then additional 11 complaints that dealt with termite-related services. So really that's not too extensive," says Thomas.
