Frederick Memorial Hospital has expressed some interest in providing school health services. "I think people are aware of other services that county government had been involved in, where there was a question as to whether county government needed to provide it directly. I think there is an awareness that from the part of the commissioners and the hospital that in Washington County, Meritus is providing health services," said Dr. Barbara Brookmyer, Frederick County Health Department.
Officials discussed the option during a meeting last week. "There is no urgency or mandate to make changes, but having more staff would be beneficial. One of our schools, this month, had 47 visits to the health room. It's not like it used to be. Kids are being diagnosed with diabetes and allergies, and having people with more experience would be beneficial," continued Brookmyer.
One alternative to privatization would be replacing health room technicians with registered nurses.
Brookmyer first learned of the hospital's interest in a phone conversation with staff a few months ago, she said.
