Rabies is a viral disease which affects mammals and is spread by the saliva of an infected animal. Human cases can be fatal if left untreated. Symptoms of rabies in animals include fear of water, limping salivating, unusually friendly or aggressive behavior, or atypical behaviors, such as nocturnal animals coming out during the day, according to a news release from the Frederick County Health Department.
"To protect your family from possible rabies exposure, do not touch or play with wild or stray animals and make sure your pets are vaccinated," says George Keller, Director of the Frederick County Health Department's Environmental Health Services, in a statement.
