Brunswick Railroad Days hits a milestone this year, as it celebrates three decades as a festival, honoring its railroad heritage. The event takes place on October 5 & 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in downtown Brunswick. Free admission. Rain or shine.
Brunswick Railroad Days began in 1983, by volunteers of the Brunswick Railroad Museum. The weekend event was conceived as a fund raiser for the nonprofit museum, to attract visitors interested in the City's railroad heritage. Crafts, food, tours of the museum and rail yards were provided and the festival grew larger and larger each year. Eventually, the City of Brunswick offered to help sponsor and run the event.
Brunswick's railroad history dates back to 1834, when the B&O railroad arrived in town and co-existed with the C&O Canal for 50 years. Then in 1891, Brunswick became a major train hub, when the railroad built one of the largest rail yards in the nation...a six mile rail yard along the Potomac River, boosting the town's population to over five-thousand residents.
In honor of the 30th year, a 30th Brunswick Railroad Days commemorative postage stamp will be sold by the U.S. Postal Service from a van, on site. In addition, the Post Office will be selling an envelope with a Commemorative 30th Railroad Days cachet logo; and for free, the Post Office will offer a Commemorative 30th Railroad Days cancellation stamp. All three products are collector items.
The events schedule includes something for everyone. It kicks off with an opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m., honoring three retired railroad workers. Mayor Karin Tome will present them with a plaque from the City of Brunswick at Square Corner Park at Maple & East Potomac Streets, downtown Brunswick. The weekend includes scenic train rides which are one hour, non-stop and round trip, traveling over rivers and through West Virginia's countryside. The train departs Brunswick train station at Railroad Square at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Tickets go on sale the same day of the event, and can be purchased at City Hall, one block up from the parking lot and train station. Cost for adults is $11.00. Seniors (60+), $5.00 for children (3-12 yrs), and kids under 3 is free.
