FREDERICK, Md. (KR) The Frederick City Police will be out in full force writing citations and sharing education on the serious affects of distracted driving this month.
April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Michelle Bowman, Outreach Coordinator for the Frederick Police says drivers should “park the phone before you drive.”
“In the state of Maryland, there are over 53-thousand distracted driving crashes every year. Which account for 58% of the total crashed in Maryland, so if you think about it, that’s a huge amount, and there’s over 28-thousand people injured every year and over 230 deaths as a result of distracted driving in Maryland,” said Bowman.
She said you are 23 times more likely to crash while texting or using your phone while driving.
“We really want parents to reach out to their teen drivers because we know that statistically under the age of 20 has the highest proportion of distracted drivers involved in fatal crashes,” said Bowman.
Bowman said anything that takes your eyes and focus off of the road is dangerous.
