Frederick, Md (KM) A Frederick man was sentenced on Tuesday for three felony offenses. Ezra Malik Smith, 25, was given a total of 17 years incarceration for weapons and drug offenses with credit for time-served since February, 2025.
Smith pleaded guilty in August to illegal possession of a regulated firearm with a prior conviction for a crime of violence. He also pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and wearing and carrying a firearm in relation to a drug trafficking crime.
The State’s Attorney’s Office says Smith was arrested in February 25th, 2025 by Sheriff’s Office detectives who were serving a search warrant at an apartment building on Motter Avenue in Frederick where Smith was staying. He was taken into custody in the building’s elevator. After he was taken outside, Smith tried to flee, but was apprehended.
Authorities say at the time of his arrest, Smith had a handgun in his possession, and two loaded extended-capacity magazines. He also had ten grams of cocaine, a digital scale and a cell phone.
Detectives say a search warrant was served on the defendant’s cell phone, and conversations on the phone indicated Smith was involved in illegal drug activity.
After his release from prison, Smith will be placed on five years of supervised probation.
“I would like to commend ASA {Assistant State’s Attorney Paul} Tumulty on his zealous prosecution of a defendant who is a true public threat. Our community is safe knowing this guy will serve a substantial sentence,” says State’s Attorney Charlie Smith, in a statement.
