Martinsburg, WV (JK) – A Martinsburg High School custodian is facing 29 charges after authorities say he was discovered hiding in a girls’ locker room during a basketball game earlier this month.
According to officials, the incident happened February 12th while Martinsburg High School was hosting Hedgesville High School for a girls’ basketball game. Custodian William Shoup was allegedly found inside a closet in the girls’ locker room. Law enforcement was contacted immediately after he was discovered.
Authorities have filed a total of 29 charges against Shoup. Details about the specific charges have not yet been released as the investigation continues.
Berkeley County Schools issued a statement confirming that all students involved were interviewed and their families were notified. District officials say they are working closely with law enforcement and emphasized that Shoup will not return to the school.
Superintendent Ryan Saxe described the incident as deeply concerning and said the district’s priority is supporting affected students and families while ensuring accountability.
The school system also addressed questions about its hiring procedures, noting that background checks are required for all employees. Officials said they could not provide additional details due to the ongoing investigation.
