Frederick, Md. (DG) – Maryland’s top Republicans are pushing back against a federal lawsuit filed by Anthony Brown over a proposed immigration detention center in Washington County.
Brown is asking the U.S. District Court for Maryland to block the Trump administration’s plan to convert a warehouse into a 1,500-bed facility operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, arguing the project moved forward without required environmental reviews or coordination with state and local leaders.
But Maryland Republicans are sharply criticizing the move. House Minority Leader Jason Buckel says Democrats are prioritizing politics over public safety, accusing the Attorney General of focusing on immigration battles instead of crime and gang activity in the state.
Earlier this month, Washington County Commissioners approved a resolution backing ICE, the Department of Homeland Security, and local law enforcement in their efforts to enforce federal immigration laws.
