Hagerstown, MD (JK) – Washington County Commissioner Derek Harvey has resigned from his seat, effective Tuesday, February 24. Harvey, a Republican from Smithsburg elected in 2022, had missed several recent board meetings and did not file for re-election this year.
County officials say Harvey is stepping down to pursue new business opportunities that align with his family and professional goals. The Washington County Republican Central Committee has been notified of the vacancy and will recommend a replacement to Governor Wes Moore, who will appoint someone to serve the remainder of Harvey’s term.
All five commissioner seats are up for election this year. Harvey is a retired U.S. Army colonel and previously served on the House Intelligence Committee and the White House National Security Council.
