Highway officials say crews will stabilize rockslide-prone section of the roadway.

Harpers Ferry, WV (KM) Starting September 12, 2023, US 340 near Harpers Ferry will be closed to traffic. The West Virginia Division of Highways says a contractor will be working to stabilize the rockslide prone section of the roadway.
The highway was constructed in the mid-1950’s, and has been prone to rockslides.
Officials say rock will be removed and rockfall barriers will be installed above US 340 where it hugs the Shenandoah River south of Harpers Ferry.
The work is expected to be completed by December 12, 2023.
Motorists who travel that stretch of US 340 will be detoured. to WV 9 and Virginia SR 9 and Virginia SR 671.
US 340 is a high volume traffic corridor, carrying about 24,500 vehicles per day, including local, commuter and truck traffic from West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland, according to the West Virginia Division of Highways.
