FREDERICK, MD – The Frederick County Board of Elections is working with Frederick County Public Schools to encourage eligible high-school students to participate in the civic process by working as election judges in a program facilitated in part by the League of Women Voters of Frederick County. The program offers an opportunity for students to earn Student Service Learning credit or pay, for working as election judges in the 2024 primary and general elections. As an election judge, a student would be paid $250 for working on election day and $50 for training provided by the Board of Elections.
The primary election will be Tuesday, May 14, 2024, and the general election will be Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Frederick County Public Schools are closed on both of those days, allowing students to participate without missing classroom instruction.
Students should work with their high school’s Student Service Learning Coordinator to determine eligibility and complete the necessary paperwork. In order to serve as an election judge, students who are 18 must be registered to vote, while 16 and 17-year-olds must pre-register to vote and complete the parent permission form available at https://frederickcountymd.gov/1198/Board-of-Elections. Election Director Barbara Wagner states, “In order to meet the need for election judges on Election Day, in all 59 polling places, we need to recruit from all sources. This is a great opportunity for FCPS students to help their community, get involved and learn about democracy. Thanks to the League and FCPS for all their work on this continued, coordinated project.”
Election Judges are responsible for administering the voting procedures and making the process as easy as possible for the voters. They greet and check-in voters, give directions and oversee the procedures to ensure voters are able to cast their ballots while maintaining the integrity of the process. Judges are the face of the election process and represent their county, state and country to the voting public. The county board of elections provides a required three to three-and-a-half hour training class.
The League of Women Voters of Frederick County is a nonpartisan organization that encourages informed and active participation in government. The League focuses on empowering voters and defending democracy, while working to increase understanding of major local, state, and national issues.
