New Phone Scam In Carroll County

Phone scammers target victims impersonating Sheriffs Office employees.

Westminster, MD (JK) – The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has reported that a new wrinkle to an old phone scam is circulating in the county.  As reported on their Facebook Page, scammers who claim to be Law Enforcement Officers (sometimes even using the names of actual Sheriff’s Office employees), are demanding money from victims so that they or their loved-ones may avoid being arrested.

Scammers identify themselves as a Captain with the Sheriff’s Office claiming that a  warrant will be issued due to a person missing jury duty. They demand payment via gift cards or cash apps to stop the process.

The scam is currently under investigation.  The Sharrif’s Office says government agencies DO NOT demand payment via gift cards and cash apps.

If you are contacted by this scammer, hang up and call the CCSO Duty Officer at 410-386-5900. Do not call the scammer’s number back.

The Sheriffs Office is asking the public to please share this information with friends and relatives, especially those who are not on social media.
