Col. Christopher M. Chung assumes garrison command on July 23rd.
FORT DETRICK, Md. — Col. Ned B. Marsh will relinquish command of the U.S. Army Garrison
at Fort Detrick to Col. Christopher M. Chung, July 23, 2024, during a ceremony in the Fort Detrick
auditorium, located at 1520 Freedman Drive, at 9 a.m.
A native of Poquoson, Va., Col. Chung is a U.S. Army Aviation Officer. He graduated from the
United States Military Academy at West Point and received his commission in 2000. He holds a
Bachelor of Science in Spanish and Portuguese, a Master of Arts in Human Resource
Management, and a Master of Arts in Strategic Studies.
Col. Chung most recently served as an Afghanistan Country Director in the Office of the Under
Secretary for Policy from 2021-2024. He commanded the 2nd Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment,
1st Armored Division Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Bliss, Texas from 2017-2020. Col. Chung is
a pilot-in-command with over 2,000 flight hours in the UH-60A/L/M, HH-60M, UH-72A, and UH-1V
aircraft, and has deployed in support of combat, contingency, and humanitarian operations in
Kuwait (2001), Iraq (2004, 2005), Afghanistan (2010, 2012, 2019), and Puerto Rico (2017). He is a
graduate of the United States Army War College and the Advanced Strategic Art Program (2020-
2021).
Col. Chung’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (2 OLC), the Meritorious
Service Medal (2 OLC), the Air Medal (w/numeral 5), the Expert Field Medical Badge, the Master
Aviator Badge, and the Air Assault Badge.
