Taneytown, Md (KM) The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office charged an adult and a juvenile following a traffic stop on Wednesday afternoon. Deshawn Melique Lewis, 19, from Hampstead, and a 15-year-old boy, also from Hampstead, were taken into custody on weapons offenses.

Just before 2:00 PM, deputies conducted the stop on West Baltimore Street in Taneytown after they noticed a gray Dodge Durango had a suspended registration and an inoperable brake light. Lewis was the driver, and the teenager was a passenger, and both were ordered out of the car so a canine scan could be done.

As the youth was getting up, a handgun was found on the passenger seat.

The canine scan resulted in a positive alert and deputies searched the vehicle. They found a baggie of cannabis on the driver along with a second handgun, and an additional baggie of cannabis in a backpack.

Lewis and the juvenile were taken the Central Booking. The teenager is being charged as a juvenile.

The Sheriff’s Office says the charges against two are carrying a loaded handgun on or about their persons; knowingly transporting a loaded handgun in a vehicle; knowingly transporting a handgun in a vehicle; and possessing a handgun by a person  under 21 years of age.

The arrests were made by deputies with the Pro-Active Community Enforcement Team (PACE) who were patrolling that area at the time, the Sheriff’s Office says.
