Frederick, Md KM) A Frederick man received ten years in prison during a sentencing on Tuesday for two incidents.
The Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office says John Michael Hartman, Jr., 43, was sentenced for violating the conditions of his probation during an incident four years ago.. In that, Hartman fired five shots from a handgun into the engine blocks of two vehicles which belonged to the victim . Following that incident, he told victim “Have a nice night;” Police recovered 45-caliber shell casings at the scene.
That incident occurred on September 23rd, 2020 at 4317 Buckeystown Pike. Hartman was charged with 1st-degree assault, 2nd-degree assault, illegal possession of a firearm, reckless endangerment and illegal possession of ammunition. He pleaded guilty to 2nd-degree assault and illegal possession of a handgun. Hartman was given probation, and was told to abstain from alcohol.
On October 14th, 2022, Hartman was charged following a vehicle collision on the Baltimore National Pike and Harmony Road. State Police say Hartman’s vehicle collided with a car operated by Donald Reineke, 89, who died from his injuries. Authorities say they detected an odor of alcoholic beverages on Hartman’s breath. He was flown to Shock Trauma for treatment of his injuries. A blood test indicated the alcohol content in his blood was above the legal limit.
Hartman was convicted of ten DUI-related incidents following a bench trial.
“This defendant is not only a threat to public safety, but a threat to the lives of others,” says State’s Attorney Charlie Smith, in a statement. “He deserves this lengthy sentence. Drunk driving can quickly turn into a situation that has a profound impact on the lives of others. Most do not realize this at the time that they get behind the wheel.”
