Crash Kills 2 In Frederick County On I-70

Two people in a box truck died

Frederick, Md. (DG) – A tragic scene unfolded Sunday afternoon on I-70 in Frederick County, where a violent crash claimed two lives and shut down the highway in both directions.

It started around 4:10 p.m. near Exit 62 in New Market. Police say a BMW SUV rear-ended a box truck, sending it into the path of a tractor trailer on the opposite side. Both trucks crashed into the woods and caught fire.

Two passengers in the box truck died at the scene. Their names haven’t been released pending notification of family. The truck drivers were airlifted to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, while two BMW passengers were taken to a hospital in Hagerstown. The BMW’s driver declined treatment.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities say all causes are being considered. I-70 was shut down for several hours while the accident scene was investigated.
