The Sheriff’s Office the internet has been a big part of our children’s lives in the form of games, apps, chats and social media. But the wide web has many dangerous people trying to “groom”: children. It can start with someone claiming to be a “friend.” These individuals will complement and build trust in a child, They will also offer gifts or money and ask these children to keep secrets. These people will push boundaries very slowly until it turns into something unsafe, according to the Digital Investigations and Forensics Unit.
Parents are reminded to talk openly with their children about who they’re chatting with online, and know who their kids’ friends are both online and in person. Authorities also say check your kids’ privacy settings on apps and games, and remind them not to share any personal information such as photos or secrets with individuals they know only on line.
“Our kids deserve to feel safe online just as much as they do in the real world,” says the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, in a statement. “Having these conversations early and often is one of the best protections we can give them.”
Predators are out there, the Sheriff’s Office says. So parents should not be afraid to get involved and set boundaries.
