Money was used for unauthorized purchases for her personal benefit.
Frederick, MD (JK) – Montgomery County Police say a Washington, DC woman is facing multiple charges after allegedly stealing more than a quarter of a million dollars from her elderly grandfather who is suffering from Alzheimer’s.
Detectives arrested 45-year-old Erica Hopper in connection with the case. Investigators say Hopper was granted Power of Attorney for her then 90-year-old grandfather in 2020, giving her control over his financial affairs. Between late 2021 and this summer, she is accused of using his accounts to make more than $266,000 in unauthorized purchases for her personal benefit.
Authorities say the funds were spent on luxury clothing, cosmetic surgery, concert tickets, online shopping, car payments, and more than $35,000 in rent for a Washington, DC apartment.
Hopper was charged August 27th with multiple counts, including theft over $100,000, embezzlement, exploitation of a vulnerable adult, and identity theft. She was taken to the Central Processing Unit and later released on an unsecured personal bond.
