Westminster, Md (KM) An investigation is underway by the State Fire  Marshal’s Office into a barn fire Sunday afternoon in the Westminster area which killed four horses.

The Westminster Volunteer Fire Company says the call came shortly after 1:00 PM for a working barn fire with horses trapped in the 200 block of Bell Road. Units arriving at the scene saw heavy fire and smoke coming from the structure estimated to be about 100 feet to 50 feet.   Units from all over Carroll County and some neighboring jurisdictions responded.

Fire personnel ran into problems due to a water main break on nearby Royer Road.   Fire officials say tankers were used to shuttle water to their scene.

There were also problems with flying embers which ignited spot fires in surrounding fields. A brush truck from the Reese and Community Volunteer Fire Company responded to control these fires and prevent them from spreading.

It took fire fighters several hours to put out the flames and do extensive overhaul operations. The Fire Marshal’s Office estimates damage at $250,000.

A 25-year-old man was taken to the hospital with 1st-degree burns to his right hand.  Two other people were treated at the scene for their injuries, and refused transport to the hospital.
