Frederick, Md. (DG) – A firefighter was injured while battling a fast-moving fire at the Crystal Park Apartments in Frederick Friday afternoon that forced dozens of residents from their homes.
Fire crews were called to the 800 block of Gabriel Court off of Baughmans Lane just before 2:40 p.m., where flames were already pushing through the roof of a three-story apartment building. Windy conditions helped the fire spread quickly, prompting officials to call a second alarm and bring in additional crews.
During the response, part of a ceiling collapsed inside the building, striking a fire captain as crews were moving up a stairwell. A mayday was declared, and fellow firefighters quickly pulled the injured captain from the structure. The firefighter was taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
About 75 firefighters from Frederick and Washington counties responded to the blaze. The fire damaged two buildings, impacting 24 apartment units and leaving residents displaced as investigators work to determine what caused the fire.
