HAGERSTOWN, MD (JK) — Officials report that 50-year-old Monae Williams-Lee has died from injuries sustained in a Hagerstown house fire last Friday. The fire, which occurred just before 1 a.m. on March 13, 2026, at 145 S. Prospect Street, also left a 17-year-old in critical condition.
Deputy Maryland State Fire Marshals determined the blaze was caused by an electrical failure. Firefighters from Hagerstown Professional Fire Fighters Local 1605, along with neighboring departments, responded to the scene and found heavy fire throughout the structure’s first-floor apartment.
A 15-year-old occupant escaped the home without injury after a smoke alarm activated, while Williams-Lee and the 17-year-old were rescued and initially treated at Meritus Medical Center before being flown to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.
This incident marks the first fire-related fatality in Washington County for 2026. Authorities emphasized the importance of working smoke alarms and having a home escape plan, noting that quick action can save lives in a fire.
Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray expressed condolences for the victims and praised the firefighters for their efforts in the rescue.
