Frederick, MD (JK) – Frederick County has secured $1 million in federal funding to redevelop a senior center and add affordable housing at 1440 Taney Avenue, marking a significant step in expanding services for older residents.
The funding was backed by Maryland’s congressional delegation, and included as part of the Fiscal Year 2026 Congressionally Directed Spending program included in the federal Transportation, Housing and Urban Development spending bill. The bill was recently signed into law by President Donald Trump.
County Executive Jessica Fitzwater says the initiative is aimed at creating a modern, multi-use space that combines a renovated senior center with affordable housing for older adults. The approach is designed to improve access to services, promote social engagement, and support residents who want to remain in the community as they age.
Officials say the upgraded facility will serve seniors from across the county while also increasing the availability of affordable housing units. The project has also drawn support from community partners focused on expanding accessible housing and co-locating services.
Frederick County plans to issue a request for proposals for a public-private partnership in Fiscal Year 2026. If the project moves forward as expected, construction could be completed between 2028 and 2030.
