Annapolis, MD (JK) – Local Delegate Eric Bouchat, R-Carroll and Frederick counties, is facing increasing pressure to resign after reports highlighted his absence from most legislative duties. Since late February, Bouchat has reportedly attended only brief morning sessions to record his vote, leaving a marble statue of Aristotle in his seat while continuing to collect a taxpayer-funded salary.
Fellow lawmakers across both chambers say Bouchat’s absence reduces representation for District 5 and undermines accountability for elected officials. Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready and House Minority Leader Jason Buckel have publicly urged the freshman delegate to step down, allowing a qualified replacement to serve until the start of the new term in January 2027.
The situation has sparked debate among colleagues, with some criticizing Bouchat’s comments about legislative votes being “worthless” and questioning his commitment to public service. Advocacy for resignation continues to grow, including calls from members of the Maryland House Freedom Caucus.
