Frederick, Md. (DG) – A Frederick man has been found guilty following a bench trial in a violent assault that happened along a popular trail in 2024.
On March 23, 2026, a Frederick County Circuit Court judge convicted 36-year-old John David Hawk of attempted third- and fourth-degree sex offenses, second-degree assault, and false imprisonment after a four-day trial.
The case stems from an attack on March 6, 2024, along the Canal Towpath Trail near Point of Rocks. Authorities say a woman jogging just before sunset was tackled, pinned to the ground, and had her mouth and nose covered as the suspect tried to drag her toward the water. She managed to escape, ran into the woods, and called 911 using her Apple Watch. She was later found with injuries after a 40-minute search.
Investigators used a composite sketch, cell phone data, and help from multiple agencies, including the FBI, to identify Hawk. Records showed his phone was in the area and indicated he may have waited for nearly an hour before the attack. The victim later identified him in a photo lineup.
Hawk was arrested in South Carolina in 2025 and extradited to Maryland. He is being held without bond pending sentencing.
