HANCOCK, MD (JK) — A fatal shooting on Whispering Wind Road in Hancock on February 21, 2026, has been ruled justified after review by law enforcement and a grand jury.
Brian Keith Lavoie Jr., the adult victim, was transported to Meritus Medical Center following the incident, where he later died from his injuries. Investigators with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office determined that a juvenile discharged the firearm in defense of self and others during the event.
The Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and agreed with the findings. A grand jury later reviewed the circumstances and declined to return an indictment, supporting the determination that the juvenile’s actions were justified.
Due to the involvement of a juvenile, officials have said no additional details will be released at this time to protect privacy.
