Annapolis, MD (JK) – Spring is here, and Maryland’s black bears are waking up from their winter dens. After months without food, these hungry animals are starting to explore areas near homes — and anything left out, like birdseed, dog food, or trash, can attract them.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has some simple tips to keep bears out of your yard:
- Take down bird feeders from April through November.
- Lock up garbage in bear-proof bins or store it in a garage until pickup.
- Keep pet food indoors and don’t leave bowls outside.
- Clean grills and put them away when not in use.
Most bears are found in western counties — Frederick, Washington, Allegany, and Garrett — but wandering youngsters can appear anywhere in central or southern Maryland.
Exposing bears to human food teaches them to look for easy meals, which can lead to repeated visits and possible conflicts. A few small changes can make a big difference, keeping both you and the bears safe.
