Two-time NBA champion and former sixth-man of the year winner J.R. Smith was arrested on a charge of family violence on Tuesday in Texas, according to Hunt County jail records.
The former Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks guard was reportedly pulled over thanks to an automatic license plate reader stop, where he was arrested due to an outstanding warrant and charged with assault causing bodily injury and family violence.
He remains in the Hunt County Detention Center, where, according to TMZ, jail records show that no bond has been posted at this time.

Smith last played in the 2020 COVID-19 shortened season for the Los Angeles Lakers, where he won his second and final NBA Championship.
He is perhaps most well-known for his stints in New York and Cleveland, though, where he won a Sixth Man of the Year award and an NBA title, respectively.
Smith has not formally retired from the NBA, but his inactivity over the past six years coupled with his off-the-court endeavors might suggest that phase of his life is over.

The former NBA star recently returned to college at North Carolina A&T State University, where he graduated in May 2026 and even famously joined the school’s golf team.
This is not Smith’s first run-in with the law. He pleaded guilty to reckless driving in connection with a 2007 crash that killed one of his passengers and later served 24 days in jail.
