‘Nightcaps’ is a daily column that catches you up on the biggest sports, news and culture stories you may have missed while pretending to do work at your desk. It runs Monday-Friday on OutKick.com.
Well …
That wasn’t fun! It never is when you get walloped by a tsunami, I reckon. At least it was a quick night. Thank goodness I had MACtion to watch instead.
Look, we’re not gonna get too political today because that’s not why you’re here. You’re here for a break from the election stuff. I get it. I don’t blame you.
But, we are gonna talk about it for a second — mainly because some of the memes and posts that we’re getting today over on Elon’s Twitter are really incredible. That’s the silver lining in all this. We may have gotten absolutely bludgeoned last night, but you can’t say we’ve lost our sense of humor.
And Lord knows it’s better to laugh through the pain than cry. This election cycle is, mercifully, over. Today, we throw some pronouns in our work email and start picking up the pieces.
Let’s roll.
Welcome to a Hump Day Nightcaps — the one where Jordan Love and his wife mock the terrible NFL referees for Halloween. This is a late submission for costume of the year, but the Loves got it in just in time.
Well done!
What else? I’ve got the aforementioned election memes, and the biggest travesty from last night’s polls had nothing to do with the house or senate.
It came right from College Football Playoff Headquarters. I’m gobsmacked by some of these rankings, and I don’t use that term loosely.
Gobsmacked.
OK, grab you whatever you need to ease the post-election pain, and settle in for a Hump Day ‘Cap!
Jordan Love isn’t a fan of terrible NFL refs, either
Let’s spin the wheel and start today’s first Hump Day of November class with my favorite topic …
Horrible officiating!
It’s been another awful season for both college and NFL refs, but mainly NFL. Every game has been a flag-fest. It’s absurd. It’s hurt the product. It’s hurt the production. It’s killed momentum of all the big games.
Every time there’s a big kick return or a big play, you’re almost expecting a flag. You can’t even celebrate, because you know it’s coming back.
And of course, when there’s an obvious flag situation …
It goes uncalled:
I know I’m a few days late on that, but I was off yesterday so you get what you get.
Anyway, it’s all been terrible, and Packers QB Jordan Love and wife Ronika decided over the weekend that enough was enough.
I’m sure Goodell will love this!
Election memes have made this day tolerable
Amazing.
Now, a couple things …
- A quarterback complaining about blind refs is hilarious. They’re awful, but — that Sam Darnold no-call aside — they’re usually terrible towards the defense. You can barely breathe on a QB nowadays, much less sack him.
- Still, the point remains: NFL officiating has been horrific this season, and I don’t see it getting any better. It’s gotten progressively worse each year. Why would they stop now?
- The NFL probably can’t fine Love for this (right?), but you know Goodell would LOVE to.
Anyway, solid costume idea from the Love Family. Like last night’s bloodbath, they are laughing through the pain.
Speaking of last night …
If you want to get into the Xs and Os of why Republicans got manhandled, there are 50,000 stories on Fox right now. Take your pick.
For those who want a break, let’s dive into some of the best content the internet pumped out in the wake of the Blue Tsunami:
What in the world is going on with these rankings?
I could go on and on. Last night was miserable, but buddy, the internet saved it. I don’t know how much longer Elon’s gonna have control of that platform, so we better enjoy it while we can!
As for the results themselves …
I live in Florida. I said Monday I was a 4.6 out of 10 on a concerned level as it pertained to Florida. I was right. It wasn’t the cakewalk 2024 (or ’22) was, but Florida was never in play. The rest of the country, clearly, did not follow suit.
It’s The Economy, Stupid!
Going into the midterms with gas stations displaying numbers in the 5s, 6s and 7s was never, ever going to work. It’s really pretty simple.
OK, let’s rapid-fire this Hump Day class into a big Hump Day night. First up? While I could reasonably figure out one set of polls last night, I was as confused as ever by the other set …
What are we doing here?
Goodness gracious, I have so many questions from that first CFP poll.
- Utah and Indiana seem way too high. Has the committee seen Indiana play offense this season? I don’t care if they’re defending champs.
- Alabama at 5 was shocking to watch happen in real time. The Tide have lost two of three, and got BLOWN out by a decent-but-not-great Tennessee team.
- Speaking of that Vols team … they’re ranked eight spots lower. Figure that one out.
- Kentucky and Ole Miss are both in the correct spots.
- Texas is not.
- BYU looked awful against a UCF team that then got blown out by an awful Baylor teams. BYU’s big win on the year came against a Notre Dame team the committee clearly isn’t buying. Not sure I see them at 9.
- Finally … Wake Forest, in my opinion, got hosed here.
I don’t know how much Wake Forest you all have watched this season, but the Demon Deacons are legit. I know, because I’ve routinely bet them each week and it’s been free money. For some reason, Vegas hasn’t caught up yet.
They have one loss this season, and it came to No. 1 Miami in a game that got uncomfortably close at the end. They’ve blown out everyone else — literally. The Demon Deacons have won their last four games by 156 points, folks.
One-hundred and fifty-six!
I’m no ACC fan, believe me. I’m an SEC homer, admittedly. But everything about this first poll stinks. The good news? Much like the preseason AP poll, it really doesn’t matter. A lot of football still to be played.
Final month of the regular season is here. Lock it in, folks.
OK, that’s it for today. Good Hump Day. Feel like we navigated some choppy waters pretty well today.
Let’s get ’em back tomorrow (2028)!

On the way out, here’s OutKick OG Anna Paulina Luna being one of the very few Republicans who survived the night.
Boy, did we nail this one a few years ago.
Congrats, APL!
