Gaithersburg, Md. (DG) – A 16-year-old student is in custody following a shooting at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville on Monday. Police say the incident occurred around 2:15 p.m., when officers from Montgomery County and Rockville City responded to reports of a shooting.
The first officers on scene found a 16-year-old male student from Gaithersburg with a single gunshot wound in a school hallway. He was taken to a hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Authorities quickly identified the suspect, also a 16-year-old male from Rockville, and took him into custody nearby. Investigators say there is no further threat to the public.
As a precaution, the school was placed on lockdown, and students were later reunited with family at Robert Frost Middle School. The suspect will be charged as an adult, and police are working with the State’s Attorney’s Office on formal charges. Rockville City Police are leading the investigation, with more details expected.
