Annapolis, Md. (DG) – Maryland Gov. Wes Moore used his fourth State of the State address Wednesday to urge lawmakers to take up his controversial mid-cycle congressional redistricting plan, arguing new maps are needed as other states redraw theirs ahead of the 2026 elections. Moore said Maryland should “debate it, discuss it and put it to a vote” on the House-passed map that would alter the state’s districts.
The proposal faces sharp resistance not just from Republicans but also from some Democrats in the state Senate.
Senate President Bill Ferguson has refused to bring the bill to the floor, saying mid-decade redistricting could have legal risks and distract from core issues like the state budget. Maryland Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey, criticized the governor’s focus on redistricting and other policies, saying his priorities haven’t made life more affordable for residents.
