Frederick, Md. (DG) – Maryland is ending its formal cooperation with federal immigration authorities after Wes Moore signed new legislation on Tuesday blocking counties from using 287(g) agreements. The move comes despite strong objections from sheriffs and public safety leaders across the state. The legislation impacts nine counties, including Frederick, Carroll, and Washington.
Republicans in the Maryland Senate say the law strips away local control and forces a single statewide policy on communities with different needs. Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey argues those agreements were voluntary tools that helped counties deal with serious crime.
Senator Justin Ready says ending the partnerships also eliminates federal training, funding, and structured cooperation, which could actually increase direct federal enforcement in Maryland.
The law now shuts down all remaining 287(g) agreements statewide.
