City of Frederick Considers Extending Voting Rights To Non-Citizens

This is one potential charter change up for debate.Frederick, Md. (BW)- The Frederick Board of Alderman is discussing some changes to the city’s charter, including allowing non-U.S citizens to vote in city elections.Only U.S citizens are permitted to vote in Federal or State elections, however, some municipal governments have adjusted voting standards to allow more people to vote in local elections.Some communities across the nation have extended voting rights to green card holders, undocumented aliens, 16-year-olds and non-residents.The Board of Alderman is still discussing the standard for “non-citizen”.If Frederick city residents disagree with the charter changes, they can petition to move items to a public vote.The next election for the City of Frederick is in 2025.
