Code Orange Air Day In The Region, Including Frederick County

Residents are urged to take precautions.Washington DC (KM) Today (Wednesday) is a Code Orange air day in the region, including Frederick County. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments says that means that the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups.Wash COG says smoke from wild fires in Canada are contributing to the increased level of fine particle pollution.Children and older adults should reduce outdoor activities Healthy individuals should limit strenuous work or exercise especially outdoors. Individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, emphysema, asthma, or chronic bronchitis should limit their activities. If breathing becomes difficult, move indoors, Wash COG says.There are steps residents can take to help reduce pollution. They include turning off the lights when they’re  not in use, and follow tips from your electric utility on how to use less electricity. Also, avoid mowing the lawn or use  an electric mower. Residents can also use public transit, carpool or work from home as a way to limit driving. Wash COG says it’s best to fill up your gas tank during the evening hours.By Kevin McManus
