Greenbelt, Md. (DG) – A Silver Spring Navy officer is heading to federal prison after being convicted of cyberstalking his ex-wife and her boyfriend.
Federal prosecutors say 45-year-old Jason Michael Leidel, a Navy lieutenant commander, was sentenced to three years and five months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Authorities say Leidel carried out a years-long harassment campaign after his divorce.
Investigators say he repeatedly sent emails with false accusations in an attempt to get his ex-wife fired from her job as a special education teacher. Prosecutors say he also tried to have her and their children evicted and filed repeated false reports with child protective services.
When his ex-wife began dating someone new, officials say Leidel escalated the harassment, sending false claims to the man’s supervisors and accusing him of abusing children. The case was investigated by federal and local law enforcement agencies.
