Frederick, Md. (DG) – Maryland officials are urging residents to get ready for potentially dangerous weather as Governor Wes Moore has declared a State of Preparedness ahead of a significant severe weather threat across the state today.
A powerful cold front is expected to move through Maryland, bringing a line of thunderstorms that could arrive as early as Monday morning and continue into the evening hours. Forecasters say the storms could produce damaging wind gusts between 70 and 80 miles per hour, large hail, and an increased risk for tornadoes across much of the state.
Those conditions could lead to downed trees and power lines, structural damage, debris, travel delays, and possible power outages. State officials say the State of Preparedness allows agencies to coordinate resources and share information more quickly so they can respond rapidly if conditions worsen.
Residents are being encouraged to take steps now to prepare. That includes securing or bringing in loose outdoor items, charging electronic devices in case of power outages, and staying up to date with local forecasts and weather alerts.
Emergency officials also recommend having a family emergency plan and an emergency kit ready, including knowing where to take shelter if a tornado warning is issued. During severe weather, residents are urged to stay indoors and make sure pets are brought inside as well.
Officials also remind Marylanders that generators should only be used outdoors and placed at least 20 feet from homes, away from windows, doors, and vents.
