Hagerstown, MD (JK) – Motorists traveling near Hagerstown should expect overnight lane closures on Interstate 70 this week as crews install structural steel on bridges over Route 11.
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration says work is scheduled to begin Thursday, March 19.
Starting at 7 p.m. Thursday, crews will close a single lane on westbound I-70 over Route 11. On Friday evening, March 20, a single-lane closure will also be in place on eastbound I-70. In addition, traffic on Route 11 beneath the interstate will be reduced to one lane with flagging operations both nights while crews work overhead.
All lanes are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. each morning, weather permitting.
The steel installation is part of a larger roadway and bridge improvement project involving six bridges along the I-70 corridor. The overall project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2027, depending on weather conditions.
Crews will use message boards, signs and traffic barrels to guide motorists safely through the work zone. Officials are reminding drivers to slow down, stay alert and avoid distractions when traveling through construction areas.
