Frederick, Md. (DG) – Maryland’s congressional delegation is pressing for answers about the status of a key federal research lab at Fort Detrick.
In a new letter to federal health officials, lawmakers say they are concerned about ongoing uncertainty surrounding the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Integrated Research Facility. The lab has been largely inactive following a safety stand-down that halted research operations months ago.
The delegation is now asking for an update on when work could resume and how recent changes may affect the facility’s future. Lawmakers also raised concerns about reports of restructuring within the agency and whether that could shift priorities away from biodefense and pandemic preparedness.
The facility plays a critical role in studying dangerous infectious diseases and preparing for future health threats.
Lawmakers say they are seeking clarity to ensure the lab can safely return to full operation and continue its mission of protecting public health.
