Hagerstown, Md. (DG) – Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Congresswoman April McClain Delaney held a closed-door meeting Monday in Washington County to discuss growing opposition to a proposed ICE detention facility near Williamsport. Both leaders raised concerns about transparency, environmental impacts, and a lack of public input surrounding the project.
Republican leaders, however, continue to support the facility, arguing it would improve immigration enforcement and bring jobs and economic growth to the area. Local GOP officials say the center would help federal authorities process detainees more efficiently and enhance public safety. The facility is expected to house up to 1,500 detainees and represents a major expansion of detention capacity in the region.
Meanwhile, a federal judge has temporarily halted renovations at the site after a lawsuit from Maryland’s attorney general. The court order pauses construction while legal challenges over environmental reviews and public input move forward.
