Frederick, MD (JK) – Frederick County Public Schools has announced four finalists for its 2026-27 Teacher of the Year award, recognizing outstanding educators from across the district.
The finalists are Emma Jozwiak of Deer Crossing Elementary, Kim Pestka of Hillcrest Elementary, Alicia Souder of Parkway Elementary, and Lei Ann Woozley of New Market Elementary. One of the four will be selected to represent Frederick County in the Maryland State Teacher of the Year program.
Jozwiak, a kindergarten teacher at Deer Crossing Elementary, serves as a team leader and mentor while also contributing to school improvement efforts and supporting educator development at the county level. She recently earned National Board Certification in Early Literacy and holds degrees from Towson University and Hood College.
Pestka is a behavior support specialist at Hillcrest Elementary with more than two decades of experience in education. She plays a key role in fostering student engagement and academic growth, while also mentoring teachers and leading school-based initiatives. Pestka earned her degrees from the University of Maryland, College Park and Goucher College.
Souder, a literacy specialist at Parkway Elementary, has spent her entire 21-year career at the school. In addition to her work with students, she supports statewide literacy efforts by facilitating Maryland State Department of Education reading courses and family engagement programs. She holds degrees from Mount St. Mary’s University and also teaches graduate-level courses at Hood College.
Woozley, a fourth and fifth grade teacher at New Market Elementary, brings 20 years of experience to the classroom. She has held several leadership roles, including team leader and school improvement chair, and is involved in advancing instructional practices and personalized learning. Woozley earned her undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida and a master’s degree from McDaniel College.
Each Frederick County school may nominate one educator for the Teacher of the Year program, which highlights excellence in teaching and leadership. A full list of this year’s nominees is available online.
The current Frederick County Public Schools Teacher of the Year is Monocacy Elementary’s Alonna Soward-Puryear, who also holds the title of Maryland State Teacher of the Year.
