Hagerstown, Md. (DG) – A routine traffic stop in Washington County quickly turned into a significant drug and weapons investigation, ending with two arrests.
According to authorities, a deputy with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office stopped a vehicle early Wednesday morning as it left the Motel 6 on Massey Boulevard. During the stop, the deputy noticed signs of possible drug activity and requested assistance from a K9 unit with the Hagerstown Police Department.
After the K9 alerted to the presence of narcotics, officers searched the vehicle and uncovered two firearms, more than 80 grams of suspected fentanyl in both capsule and powder form, roughly 5 grams of cocaine, and nearly 600 dollars in cash.
Investigators with the Washington County Narcotics Task Force responded to help process evidence and obtain search warrants connected to the case.
Tanika Kornegan and John Smith, both of Hagerstown, were arrested and now face multiple drug and firearm charges. Authorities say additional suspected fentanyl capsules were also found on Kornegan before she was transported to the Washington County Detention Center.
