Frederick, Md. (DG) – A dangerous multi-state pursuit that unfolded in 2020 has now ended with a lengthy prison sentence. In Frederick County Circuit Court Wednesday, 48-year-old David Robert Leatherman of Hanover, Pennsylvania was sentenced to 50 years in prison, with 35 years to serve, after pleading guilty under an Alford plea last November to two counts of first-degree assault.
The charges stem from October 19, 2020, when Leatherman—wanted for attempted murder in York County, Pennsylvania—led police on a high-speed chase in a stolen pickup truck. The pursuit crossed into Frederick County, where speeds topped 120 miles per hour and included dangerous maneuvers through roads, fields, and residential areas.
Authorities say the situation escalated when Leatherman fired multiple shots at an officer on Route 15 and then drove directly toward another officer at high speed. The chase ended near the Route 140 intersection when stop sticks disabled the truck. Leatherman fled on foot but was quickly apprehended. His passenger, Bryan Selmer, was shot and killed by police.
