Hagerstown, Md. (DG) – The U.S. District Court in Maryland has granted the state’s motion to halt the construction and operation of an ICE detention center in Washington County, a decision that’s drawing pushback from local supporters. County leaders continue to back the project, calling it a key federal investment that could bring jobs and boost the local economy.
Plans call for converting a warehouse near Williamsport into a detention facility capable of holding up to 15-hundred people. Officials in Washington County have even approved a proclamation expressing strong support for the center and for federal immigration enforcement efforts.
While Maryland leaders argue the project moved forward without proper environmental review, supporters say the federal government has the authority to proceed. For now, most construction is on hold, with only essential work underway, including security measures and repairs needed to protect the building itself as the case moves through court.
