Gaithersburg, MD (JK) – A Montgomery County Public Schools employee has been arrested following an investigation into a hidden camera discovered inside a high school theater changing room.
According to Montgomery County Police, the investigation began on April 15 after school staff were alerted to an incident reported by students at Walter Johnson High School. The students had discovered a video camera in the theater’s control booth on April 7.
After accessing the device, the students found recordings that appeared to show footage from inside a girls’ changing room. The video reportedly captured an adult male placing the camera before leaving the area, while it continued recording as students entered and changed clothes for a theater performance.
The footage was shared with the school principal, who identified the suspect as 43-year-old James Mulhern III, a media services technician at the school.
Detectives from the Special Victims Investigations Division executed search warrants at Walter Johnson High School and at Mulhern’s home in Clarksburg. Authorities say multiple electronic devices and other items of evidentiary value were recovered during those searches.
Mulhern was taken into custody and charged with sex abuse of a minor. He is currently being held at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit as he awaits a bond hearing.
The investigation remains ongoing.
