Rockville, Md. (DG) – Maryland is escalating its response to a massive sewage spill in the Potomac River by filing a lawsuit against D.C. Water.
State officials say a January pipeline collapse released about 240 million gallons of untreated wastewater into the river, creating serious environmental and public health concerns. Now, Maryland is seeking more than 50 million dollars in damages and penalties, accusing the utility of failing to maintain critical infrastructure.
The U.S. Justice Department has also filed a separate complaint alleging violations of the Clean Water Act. D.C. Water says the pipe has been repaired and long-term upgrades are underway.
