HARPERS FERRY, WV (JK) – Harpers Ferry National Historical Park will host a special living history event later this month highlighting the town’s role in American military and industrial history.
The program, “Defend and Protect: Arming the American Soldier,” is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is part of the nationwide celebration marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The event will focus on the weapons and technology produced at the Harpers Ferry Armory from the 1790s through 1861 and examine how those innovations influenced both the nation and the world.
Visitors will be able to explore Arsenal Square throughout the day, meet living history volunteers, and view historic firearms manufactured in Harpers Ferry.
Special presentations include “Forging Change: The Industrial Revolution and Harpers Ferry Armory” at 11 a.m. inside the John Brown Museum, where expert Troy Cool will discuss the armory’s role in the development of America’s industrial production system.
Another presentation at 12:30 p.m. will examine the worldwide impact of weapons produced at Harpers Ferry.
The day will also feature a ranger-led historic weapons firing demonstration at 2 p.m. Park officials are reminding visitors that loud noises will occur during the demonstration and recommend preparing children and pets accordingly.
All programs are included with regular park admission unless otherwise noted.
The National Park Service says similar events and exhibits will take place throughout the country in 2026 as part of the commemoration of America’s 250th birthday.
