Chevy Chase, MD (JK) – Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash on the Capital Beltway in Montgomery County and searching for the driver of a vehicle that fled the scene.
Troopers from the Rockville Barrack responded shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday to the outer loop of the Beltway east of Connecticut Avenue for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian.
Investigators say the victim, who has not yet been positively identified, had exited a work van parked on the left shoulder of the inner loop and attempted to cross the outer loop travel lanes. Police believe the man was carrying a gas can when he was struck by passing vehicles.
According to investigators, one of the vehicles involved left the scene before authorities arrived. Police are searching for a silver or gray sedan believed to have significant front-end damage.
A second driver involved in the crash remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue personnel. Authorities are awaiting autopsy results from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Maryland State Police are asking anyone with information about the fleeing vehicle or driver to contact the Rockville Barrack at 301-424-2101.
Troopers from the College Park Barrack, Montgomery County Police officers, and Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration personnel also assisted at the scene. Portions of the Beltway remained closed for nearly six hours during the investigation.
