Thousands of Maryland voters will receive replacement mail-in ballots after an error caused some people to get the wrong party ballot for the upcoming Gubernatorial Primary Election. State election officials say the issue only affects voters who were mailed ballots before May 14, 2026.
Affected voters will receive a new ballot packet marked “REPLACEMENT BALLOT.” The replacement packet will also include a letter titled “Attention Voter!” Officials say voters should use the replacement ballot and destroy the original ballot and envelopes.
The State Board of Elections says replacement ballots will begin mailing the week of May 18 and should arrive by May 29. Voters who signed up as permanent absentee voters or requested a mail-in ballot on or before May 13 could be affected. Officials are also sending postcards and emails to impacted voters.
Election officials say voters who received their ballot through web delivery, also known as a print-at-home ballot, are not affected by the problem.
Meanwhile, officials warn there may be a slight delay in processing new mail-in ballot requests submitted after May 14 while replacement ballots are being sent out.
