Federal authorities say a former U.S. Postal Service employee has pleaded guilty in connection with a mail theft and check-fraud investigation in Maryland.
Prosecutors say 34-year-old Derrick Stewart of Baltimore stole checks while working at a mail processing and distribution center that serviced Baltimore, Washington, Frederick, and other Maryland counties.
According to court records, Stewart carried out the scheme from September 2022 through December 2023 by stealing mail and depositing fraudulently endorsed checks into his own bank accounts. Investigators say surveillance video showed Stewart making those deposits. On December 2nd, 2023, law enforcement agents searched Stewart after he left a postal facility and recovered nearly 200 pieces of mail containing more than 700-thousand dollars.
Stewart pleaded guilty to federal mail theft, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft, charges that carry a possible 27-year prison sentence.
