Sheriffs from 17 counties in Maryland are asking a federal court to block the state’s new Community Trust Act, arguing the law weakens cooperation with federal immigration officials and creates public safety concerns.
Sheriffs from Frederick, Carroll, Washington, and Harford counties are among those involved in the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt on Tuesday. The suit claims the law interferes with law enforcement duties by preventing local agencies from honoring certain ICE detention requests unless a judicial warrant is issued. The sheriffs argue the measure obstructs federal immigration enforcement and conflicts with their responsibilities to uphold federal law.
Governor Wes Moore allowed the bill to become law without his signature despite acknowledging concerns over implementation challenges.
