Frederick County is investing another half-million dollars to help fight food insecurity. County officials announced $500,000 in Food Equity and Emergency Distribution, or FEED, grants for 19 nonprofit organizations that provide food assistance across the county.
The program was launched last November by County Executive Jessica Fitzwater and is administered through the Community Foundation of Frederick County. The funding comes as many organizations continue to face increased demand for services following the recent federal government shutdown. Recipients include the Maryland Food Bank, Seton Center, Blessings in a Backpack, Centro Hispano de Frederick, the Salvation Army, and the YMCA of Frederick County. Grant money can be used to purchase food, improve distribution efforts, and invest in equipment such as refrigeration, storage units, and commercial kitchen supplies. Other organizations receiving funding include Hood College, Frederick Community College Foundation, Goodwill Industries, and Farm to School Frederick.
County officials say the grants will help ensure residents have continued access to nutritious meals and food assistance programs throughout the community.
